TBH MarketWatch analysis of 2001 Freshman Sire
    Atticus.

    TBH MarketWatch - January, 2001

Three Chimney's Atticus has a pedigree with universal appeal and a race-record that was unusually versatile. Following a 6 1/2 -fur-long winning effort as a juvenile in France, he narrowly lost the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Fr-I, French 2000 Guineas) at a mile the following spring, having run too freely for his own good. His 4-year-old campaign highlight was winning the nine-furlong Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap (gr. III) in the slop. However, just as Atticus looked set for an outstanding 5-year-old season, fol-lowing wins in the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. I) on the main track and a world record setting run of 1:31.89 over the Santa Anita turf in the Arcadia Handicap (gr. IIT), an injury forced his retirement.

By sire-of-sires Nureyev, Atticus is an unique runner for his sire having won stakes both on turf and dirt. Nureyev's record shows only 11 dirt stakes winners to 114 turf stakes winners. Atticus is from the five-time group-winning mare Athyka, a daughter of the broodmare sire-of-sires Secretariat. Atticus improved with age and he has the credentials to get both dirt and turf runners, some of whom may run shorter or farther than himself. A medium-sized horse with a lot of quality, Atticus will have his 62 strong first crop divided between Europe and North America.-Atticus Nureyev-Athyka, by Secretariat Height 15.3
