Stoney Fleece, closing with aplomb, won the $100,000 Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) going away at Hollywood Park Nov. 27 for his first stakes victory.

Ridden by Joel Rosario in the one-mile test for 2-year-olds, 8-1 shot Stoney Fleece ran down pacesetter Handsome Mike in deep stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Trained by John Sadler for Gary and Cecil Barber, the California-bred Decarchy colt was clocked in a strong 1:34.77 on a firm course to remain unbeaten in two starts on grass.

The time matched that of Comma to the Top in last year's Generous, but was slightly off the stakes mark of 1:34.28 established by The Leopard in 2007.

Handsome Mike, who paid for an early speed duel with Motown Men in the final furlong, held on for second by a half-length over the late-running even-money favorite Battle Force.

Stoney Fleece was one of two entrants in the race for the Barber brothers, who claimed the bay for $40,000 out of his maiden debut win July 28 at Del Mar. The other, Senor Rain, bore out badly on the clubhouse turn and was pulled out of the race by jockey Martin Garcia.

Joseph T. Alvarez III bred Stoney Fleece, who is out of the Deputed Testamony mare Gold Fleece and originally sold for $1,200 at Barretts in January.

“His mother was very good on grass," Sadler said. "I ran her here a mile and an eighth in 1:45 4/5, and Toussaud beat her. So I have some familiarity with the family. The other (siblings) got sent to other trainers, but when this one was in for a tag, it was like an old friend/family thing. I really claimed him for grass and he’s two-for-two on turf."

Woodford Racing's Battle Force was made the solid choice in the field of nine off an impressive maiden-breaking victory at one mile on the turf at Santa Anita Nov. 4.

Motown Man, pressed hard by Handsome Mike, set a sizzling pace for the first half-mile (:22.45, :45.12) before Handsome Mike poked his head in front as they reached the quarter-pole in a swift 1:09.50. Handsome Mike, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, inched away from Motown Men in the stretch to lead by 1 1/2 lengths with a furlong to run, but he could not hold off Stoney Fleece, who was never far off the pace in fourth and got the lead in the final sixteenth of a mile under left-handed urging from Rosario.

“It was a perfect trip," Rosario said. "You couldn’t ask for anything better. I was just taking my time and hoped he had something when I asked him. He really likes the turf."

Battle Force, slow to begin for Mike Smith, angled out in the stretch and rallied from sixth but came up short.

Motown Men finished fourth, followed by Devil in Disguise, Blue White Fire, Major Magic, and Got Even.

Stoney Fleece was coming off a third-place finish in the California Cup Juvenile Oct. 29 at Santa Anita, his first start on dirt. Two weeks prior to that he won a first-level one-mile allowance heat on the Santa Anita turf.

"He’s a nice hard-knocking horse," Sadler said. "He won the starter (allowance) right away and he has never run a bad race. I wasn’t surprised he was in for a tag because he’s small. You know, you take a chance.

"I’d like to keep him on turf, but I won’t rule out some of the California-bred stakes coming up.”

Overall, Stoney Fleece has four wins in six starts and earnings of $156,680.

The winner carried 118 pounds and paid $19.60, $6, and $3.20 as the fourth choice. Handsome Mike returned $4.40 and $2.80 and completed a $69.80 exacta. The show price on Battle Force paid $2.60.

1/7/2011: Decarchy’s chief earner returns to races with stakes placing

In her first start since a March 2010 allowance victory at Santa Anita Park, the Decarchy runner Quisisana returned to the same locale for her 6-year-old debut on January 7 and finished a solid third in the $81,150 Kalookan Queen Handicap.
The California-bred mare won both of her outings on the formerly installed Pro-Ride synthetic surface during Santa Anita’s 2009-2010 winter/spring meet, including the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes, in which she defeated the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner and likely Eclipse Champion Female Sprinter, Dubai Majesty. But the Kalookan Queen, conducted at 6 1/2 furlongs on Santa Anita’s new natural surface, marked her first time on dirt in her 12-race career.
Paired with her regular rider, Rafael Bejarano, and sent postward as the 7-5 second wagering choice in the field of five distaffers, Quisisana maintained a steady pace throughout the race. The 122-pound highweight broke third from the gate and kept the same momentum all the way to the wire, which she ultimately reached behind a pair of contenders from the red-hot Bob Baffert barn. She concluded the test 2 1/4 lengths behind the front-running favorite, Mother Ruth.
Quisisana is trained by Mike Puype for Ran Jan Racing Inc. The six-time winner, who was bred by Todd Gerbovaz and produced by Distinctive Cat’s unraced daughter Mink Kiss, has banked $329,158 overall.
She is the highest earner for her California-based sire, Decarchy, a Grade 2-winning resident of Magali Farms in Santa Ynez. From four crops to race, the 14-year-old Distant View stallion counts eight stakes horses among his earners of more than $3.9 million. — January 7, 2011

10/17/2010: Decarchy filly runs third in grassy Grade 3 at Hollywood

The Decarchy filly Antares World, a game runner-up in Hollywood Park’s $250,000 American Oaks Stakes (G1) over the summer, added another graded stakes placing to her repertoire on October 17, when she ran third over the same course in the $100,000 Harold C. Ramser Sr. Handicap (G3) for 3-year-old fillies.
She was reunited for the one-mile turf test with jockey Frank Alvarado, her partner in the American Oaks and in her own two stakes wins at Golden Gate Fields earlier this year: the $75,000 California Oaks and the $60,000 Golden Poppy Stakes. Facing 10 rivals in the Ramser while receiving the lion’s share of pari-mutuel support at odds of 2-1, Alvarado and his mount stayed in contention throughout by shadowing the pacesetter, All Due Respect, from a tracking position.
Although her situation appeared hopeless as the field surrounded her at the top of the stretch, Antares World came back with a vigorous late run to snatch third from another hard-charging contender, and ultimately reached the wire less than three lengths behind the winner, Go Forth North. In the process, she collected a $12,000 check for her owners and breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams.
From 14 starts to date under the guidance of trainer Steven Specht, the California-bred filly has banked $285,458, with six wins, two seconds and two thirds to her credit. She is the first stakes performer out of Alashir’s World, a winning daughter of Spinning World.
Antares World is the second-highest lifetime earner for the Distant View stallion Decarchy, a resident of Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. The dual graded stakes winner, 13, has total progeny earnings of more than $3.7 million from four crops of racing age. — October 17, 2010

7/3/2010: Decarchy filly fights to runner-up finish in G1 American Oaks

Making the most ambitious start of her 11-race career in the $250,000 American Oaks Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park on July 3, the Northern California shipper Antares World became the first graded stakes performer for her sire, Decarchy, with her hard-fought, second-place effort in the elite grass test.
The 3-year-old filly’s accomplishments heading into the race included victories in a pair of 1 1/16-mile events at Golden Gate Fields in 2010: the $75,000 California Oaks on the track’s main Tapeta Footings surface and the $60,000 Golden Poppy Stakes on turf. But at 1 1/4 miles, the American Oaks marked her first furthest attempt; as such, she was let go at odds of 12-1 in the seven-horse field.
Joining Antares World for the journey to Southern California was her regular rider, Frank Alvarado. The twosome were involved in the race from the start, when they leapt from the gate and immediately joined a torrid battle for the early lead that had the quickest three runners more than 10 lengths in front as the sophomore fillies passed the grandstand for the first time. Although she pushed the front-running longshot Riviera Chic to fractions of :23.46, :47.26 and 1:12.07 by running a close-up second through the opening six furlongs, Antares World had enough left to take the lead herself in the final turn and to hold back the surging 2-1 favorite, City to City. But she could not match the strides of the fast-closing Harmonious, who swooped three-wide down the stretch and reached the wire in 2:01.77 as an impressive, 1 1/4-length winner.
Antares World pocketed $50,000 for second and pushed her total earnings to $229,718 for her owners, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, who bred her in California. The five-time winner, who was produced by Spinning World’s winning daughter Alashir’s World, is trained by Steven Specht.
She is one of five stakes winners for the fourth-crop sire Decarchy, a 13-year-old son of Distant View who stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. The dual graded stakes winner out of 2002 Broodmare of the Year Toussaud has cumulative progeny earnings of more than $3.3 million to date. — July 3, 2010

4/17/2010:Decarchy filly scores her second black-type victory of 2010

After a brief, unsuccessful foray to Southern California, the Decarchy filly Antares World returned to her favorite stomping grounds at Golden Gate Fields and captured her second stakes trophy of 2010 by a wide margin on April 17.
The 3-year-old filly started the year on the right note with a January 1 victory in the $75,000 California Oaks, which was conducted at 1 1/16 miles on the Northern California track’s all-weather Tapeta surface. A follow-up allowance romp at a mile in late February encouraged trainer Steven Specht to send his charge to Santa Anita Park for a class jump and surface switch to turf in the $150,000 Providencia Stakes (G2), at 1 1/8 miles, on April 3. But after pulling jockey Frank Alvarado early, she could muster no better than eighth of 10 in her graded stakes debut.
Shipped back to familiar environs at Golden Gate and kept on the turf for her next start, Antares World was sent postward for the $60,000 Golden Poppy Stakes as the heavy 3-5 favorite in the field of six sophomore fillies. Under a patient Alvarado, she rated in second through the first half-mile, drew even with the early leader in the second turn and edged away for a clear, three-length win in a final time of 1:44.25 for the grassy 1 1/16 miles.
From nine starts to date, Antares World has won five races and placed twice for her owners and breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams. The California-bred filly was produced by Spinning World’s winning daughter Alashir’s World, and has earned $170,718.
Antares World is one of five stakes winners from the first four crops of racing age sired by Decarchy, a Grade 1-placed, dual graded stakes winner who stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. 1/30/2010: Quisisana becomes Decarchy’s fifth stakes winner, top earner

When Quisisana crossed the wire first in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita Park on January 30, she accomplished more than her inaugural black-type victory; she also became the fifth stakes winner and highest lifetime earner for her California-based sire, Decarchy.
The California-bred mare defeated 12 rivals in the six-furlong test, and emerged with a $110,000 payday as one of only two winners for her home state in the six-race Sunshine Millions program, which is restricted to runners who were bred in either California or Florida. To get the job done, jockey Rafael Bejarano had to overcome a four-wide trip throughout with his 6-1 mount, who raced in sixth early, moved up to fourth in the turn, then encountered a stiff stretch battle. Quisisana responded to his urging with a late surge, and got up by a scant nose over the fast-closing runner-up, Dubai Majesty, in a final time of 1:08.47.
“She’s not very big, but she’s gutty,” said winning trainer Mike Puype, who has saddled the 5-year-old mare to five wins, one second and two thirds from 10 starts. “They ran right to her and she held them off.”
Quisisana was bred by Todd Gerbovaz, and has earned $275,758 for owners Robert Naify and Jan Van DeBos of Ran Jan Racing Inc. Her dam is Mink Kiss, an unraced daughter of Distinctive Cat.
She is a member of the first foal crop of Decarchy, a 13-year-old Distant View stallion who resides at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez. The dual graded stakes winner out of 2002 Broodmare of the Year Toussaud has total progeny earnings of more than $2.6 million. — January 30, 2010

1/1/2010: Decarchy filly wins first California stakes race of 2010

Antares World, a 3-year-old filly by the California stallion Decarchy, surpassed her runner-up finish in the $64,400 Corte Madera Stakes on December 5, 2009 with a winning return to Golden Gate Fields in the $75,000 California Oaks on January 1, 2010. The 1 1/16-mile test was conducted as the state’s first black-type race of the new year.
The Steven Specht trainee has made five of her six career starts on the Tapeta Footings all-weather surface at the Bay Area oval. She broke her maiden by nine widening lengths on October 24, followed by a half-length allowance optional claiming score on November 18 and a head-bob loss to Salty Fries in her stakes debut in the restricted, one-mile Corte Madera.
Reunited with regular rider Frank Alvarado and lined up against four rival sophomore fillies for the California Oaks, Antares World raced forwardly in second through the first half-mile, gained an advantage over the tiring front-runner in the second turn, then successfully held off a late challenger by a head in a final time of 1:45.75. She collected $45,000 for the effort to elevate her overall bankroll to $108,978.
The California-bred filly is campaigned by her breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams. She is the third foal out of Alashir’s World, a winning daughter of Spinning World.
She is by Decarchy, California’s leading first-crop sire of 2007 and leading second-crop sire of 2008. The 13-year-old son of Distant View stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, and is represented by seven stakes horses among his 55 winners to date. — January 1, 2010

1/1/2010: Antares World Scores in Oaks
By Thoroughbredtimes.com

ALBANY, Calif. (Jan. 1, 2010) -- California-bred Antares World seized command on the turn and held on for a narrow victory in the $75,000 California Oaks for 3-year-old fillies on Friday at Golden Gate Fields.
Sent off as the second wagering choice at odds of 2.20-to-1, the Decarchy filly scored by a head from Fashion Trend to earn her first stakes victory. She completed her first start at 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.75 under Frank Alvarado on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface.
Antares World won two of five starts in 2009 and entered off a head defeat in the one-mile Corte Madera Stakes on December 5 at Golden Gate. She broke her maiden going six furlongs in October at the Bay Area track then posted a 1½ length victory in an optional claiming race in her first start at a mile on November 18 prior to the Corte Madera.
Trained by Steve Specht for owners-breeders Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, Antares World has won half of her six career starts and finished off the board only once for career earnings of $108,978. She is one of two winners from three starters out of the winning Spinning World mare Alashir’s World.

12/13/2009: Juvenile stakes winner leads huge weekend for Decarchy

Sourdough Sam, a rising star among the California-bred foal crop of 2007, anchored a highly successful 24-hour period for the third-crop sire Decarchy with his inaugural stakes victory on December 12.
The 2-year-old gelding, who has now won three out of four starts at Golden Gate Fields, captured the track’s $61,400 Gold Rush Stakes over six rivals by employing a perfect stalking trip under his regular rider, Inoel Beato. The even-money favorite snared the one-mile race by an easy, one-length margin in a final time of 1:39.39.
The John Nicoletti homebred was produced by General Meeting’s winning daughter General Luster. Trained by Dean Pederson, he overcame a troubled trip to run second in Golden Gate’s six-furlong Golden Nugget Stakes on November 21, and has accrued total earnings of $95,000 while running exclusively on the Tapeta Footings all-weather surface.
While the precocious Sourdough Sam held the Saturday spotlight in Northern California, three Decarchy distaffers found their way to the winner’s circle on Sunday at Hollywood Park in Southern California.
A pair of fillies — Onefunsonofagun and Hit the Brix — provided bookends to the track’s nine-race program with their respective victories in the six-furlong opener and the five-furlong nightcap, each while running for the claiming price of $25,000. Four-year-old Onefunsonofagun is a five-time winner and $113,680-earner out of Olympic Crisis, by Olympio. She is trained by Brian Koriner for owner E-Racing.Com. Maiden winner Hit the Brix, 3, was produced by the Summing mare I Speak English and is campaigned by Anthony Narducci with trainer Mike Puype.
The dual stakes-placed filly Quisisana, a 4-year-old out of the Distinctive Cat mare Mink Kiss, extended her sire’s streak when she captured a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for Puype and owner Ran Jan Racing Inc. The four-time winner has earned $165,758 to date.

Sourdough Sam glitters in Gold Rush
By Chuck Dybdal

Sourdough Sam ($4), second in his stakes debut while suffering the first loss of his career in his previous start, handled his first try around two turns, edging clear of stakes winner Our Minesweeper in the lane to win Saturday's $61,400 Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.
Sourdough Sam, who usually has to make a big late move when sprinting, had a perfect stalking position in the one-mile Gold Rush, sitting third early behind pacesetting Swiss Memo. He made a strong four-wide move on the second turn as he and Our Minesweeper closed ground on the leader.
"We were just where we wanted to be," jockey Inoel Beato said.
By the quarter pole, Our Minesweeper had his head in front, but Sourdough Sam had the momentum and took the lead, continuing on under pressure to win by a length in 1:39.39.
"When I asked him, he got the job done," Beato said. "He was impressive."
Trainer Dean Pederson said the California Derby here Jan. 16 will likely be Sourdough Sam's next start.
The John Nicoletti homebred by Decarchy has 3 wins and a second in 4 starts. His $39,000 payday lifted his career earnings to $95,000.
Swiss Memo held third, a length behind Our Minesweeper.
Privalaged, the second choice in the race and expected pacesetter, reared at the break, getting off well behind the field.

12/11/2009: Rosario ties Hollywood Park record aboard Decarchy filly

On December 11, the Decarchy filly A Clever Ten contributed to a career-best day for jockey Joel Rosario as one of the 24-year-old rider’s six winning mounts at Hollywood Park. Through his one-man riding exhibition, Rosario equaled the Southern California track’s record for most wins in one day — a milestone which he now shares with Racing Hall of Fame jockeys Bill Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay Jr. and Kent Desormeaux.
His successful effort in the day’s fifth race came aboard A Clever Ten, a California-bred filly who was making her fourth career outing in the $28,400 starter allowance, which was carded at 6 1/2 furlongs on the Cushion Track all-weather racing surface. Rosario patiently kept his filly in fifth running position for the first half-mile, then made an aggressive, five-wide move when the six-horse field entered the stretch. A Clever Ten gained a slight advantage in the final approach, and ultimately inched away from her rivals to record a 1 1/4-length victory in 1:16.40.
The 3-year-old filly collected an $18,000 paycheck for her second lifetime win, boosting her total bankroll to $31,800. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee, who broke her maiden in a 5 1/2-furlong claiming event during the Oak Tree Racing Association meet at Santa Anita Park in mid-October, is campaigned by the ownership group of GSR Stable, Hollendorfer and Todaro.
A Clever Ten is the third foal out of the unraced Clever Trick mare Cleverness, and was sold for $33,000 at the 2008 Barretts May Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Her breeder is Milt Policzer.
Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California is the home of 12-year-old Decarchy. The Distant View stallion, a two-time graded stakes winner, was the Golden State’s leading first-crop sire of 2007 and leading second-crop sire of 2008. — December 11, 2009

12/5/2007: Juvenile Decarchy filly narrowly misses in black-type debut
With a runner-up finish in her stakes debut on December 5, the precocious Decarchy filly Antares World became the third member of the California sire’s 2007 foal crop to hit the board in a black-type race this year, joining Sourdough Sam and De Sica.
Based in Northern California, where she has made all five of her starts to date, Antares World entered Golden Gate Fields’ $64,400 Corte Madera Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on a two-race win streak at the Bay Area oval. She broke her maiden with authority over the Tapeta Footings surface on October 24, when she cruised to a nine-length victory at six furlongs; she returned on November 18 to record a half-length score at a mile in allowance optional claiming company, despite being bumped throughout her stretch drive.
The California-bred filly was installed as the 7-5 wagering favorite for the one-mile Corte Madera, and was accompanied for the journey by her regular rider, Frank Alvarado. After breaking smartly from the gate, Antares World tracked the pacesetter from second, while never positioned more than two lengths behind, then nabbed a brief lead at the top of the stretch. But the Steven Specht trainee was overtaken from the inside by Salty Fries and jockey Russell Baze, and ultimately lost by a head following a valiant battle to the wire. Two lengths further back was third-place finisher Bleach Blonde.
Antares World banked $13,000 to push her overall earnings to $63,978. She is the third foal out of Spinning World’s winning daughter Alashir’s World, and was bred by her owners, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams.

Sourdough Sam a juvenile to watch
By Chuck Dybdal

The Golden Gate trainer Dean Pederson says the term star "may be a little strong," but he thinks the undefeated 2-year-old Sourdough Sam does have potential.

A John Nicoletti homebred by Decarchy, Sourdough Sam is 2 for 2 after winning an allowance race Saturday at Golden Gate by three-quarters of a length. He rallied from last to catch Shudacudawudya, who had two wins and a second in three starts.

"The horse that ran second did everything right except win," Pederson said. "He just got caught by a horse that seems to have a lot of potential."

Pederson loves Sourdough Sam's laid-back mindset.

"He's just an old country boy," Pederson said. "What he does in the afternoon is what he does in the morning. Kiki Arriaga, my exercise rider, teaches them to relax early. This is a horse you can gallop with two fingers in the morning."

Pederson said he is "conservative to a fault by nature" and would likely look at the six-furlong Golden Nugget here on Nov. 21 and the Dec. 12 Gold Rush at a mile for Sourdough Sam's next starts.

But there are options at Hollywood Park, with the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue at seven furlongs on Nov. 21, the Grade 3 Generous on the turf, and even the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity on Dec. 19.

10/17/2009: Juvenile Decarchy runner secures black type in Arizona stakes

Two-year-old De Sica became the fifth runner by the California-based stallion Decarchy to garner black type when he outran his 39-1 odds with a third-place finish in the $87,782 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes at Turf Paradise on October 17.
The youngster has made all five of his career starts in his native Arizona, where he sold as a yearling in October 2008 for a mere $4,000. Owned and trained by Tom Bartol, the gelding has already earned nearly five times that purchase price, with his most lucrative payday to date coming in the six-furlong Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association (ATBA) event.
Competing against 11 rivals while paired for the first time with jockey Vicky Baze, De Sica raced along the rail in mid-pack, moved up in the turn and passed all but the distant winner and runner-up while making his bid in the final furlong. He banked $12,698 for the effort, pushing his total cache to $19,296.
A debut winner in maiden special weight company at Yavapai Downs last June, De Sica has won once and placed three times overall. He is the second foal out of the stakes-placed winner Italian Diva, by Silken Reality, and was bred in Arizona by Filippo Santoro.
De Sica hails from the third foal crop of Decarchy, a dual graded stakes winner by Distant View who stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. The 12-year-old stallion is a half-sibling to four Grade 1 winners, including North America’s leading third-crop sire, Empire Maker. He is represented by cumulative progeny earnings of more than $2 million of his own. — October 17, 2009

10/3/2009: Decarchy filly places in grassy, $100,000 Cal Cup Distaff

Making her downhill turf debut during the 20th annual California Cup program at Santa Anita Park, the 4-year-old Decarchy filly Quisisana took third in the $100,000 John Deere California Cup Distaff Handicap on October 3.
Contested at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the Arcadia track’s unique hillside grass course, the Cal Cup Distaff attracted a contentious field of 10 California-bred or California-sired fillies and mares aged 3 and up. In the capable hands of Eclipse Award-winning jockey Garrett Gomez, Quisisana left seven of those starters, including Grade 1 winner Golden Doc A and Grade 2 runner-up Strawberry Tart, in her rearview mirror.

7/3/2009: Decarchy colt rallies in Hollywood Park starter allowance

California’s leading third-crop sire, Decarchy, was flattered on July 3, when a colt from his initial crop of runners rallied in the Hollywood Park stretch to capture a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance.
Making his 12th career start in the $29,200 race, Troubletimesthree benefited from a patient ride by jockey Joel Rosario, who saved ground along the inside while settling off the early pace, then swung his mount out for a late-running attack on the leaders. The 4-year-old colt responded to his rider’s steady urging with a three-quarter-length score in 1:43.90, defeating seven rivals in the process.
Claimed out of his December 11, 2008 maiden victory for $25,000, Troubletimesthree has compiled an overall record of two wins, four seconds and two thirds and total earnings of $53,020. Although he trains across town at Santa Anita Park, both of his wins have come on the Cushion Track all-weather racing surface at Hollywood, each at the distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Troubletimesthree is conditioned by trainer Leonard Powell on behalf of his owners, Tony and Sue Lief and Paul Viskovich. The California-bred colt is the second winner out of the unraced Cee’s Tizzy mare Cee Again, and was bred by Magali Ventures LLC.

3/12/2009: Decarchy filly rallies late in Santa Anita starter allowance

Rev Her Up, a daughter of California’s standout third-crop sire Decarchy, lived up to her name with a late-rallying run from eighth to first in a grassy starter allowance at Santa Anita Park on March 12.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, who has been her partner in five of her six lifetime starts, the California-bred filly defeated open company and her elders in the third start of her 3-year-old campaign, which also marked her turf debut. Rev Her Up took advantage of her 115-pound impost, the joint lowest weight assignment in the 10-horse field, as well as an early, ground-saving trip along the rail on the Arcadia track’s downhill turf course. Gaining momentum in upper stretch, she shifted to an outside path and propelled forward to the wire just in time for a head victory.

Rev Her Up stopped the clock in 1:13.79 for the distance of about 6 1/2 furlongs, and returned a $28.60 win ticket as a 13-1 outsider.

Trained by Robert Hess Jr. for Mr. and Mrs. Michael Burns, the winner was bred by Mike Burns and Andy Kolbe and is the first foal out of the winning Desert King (Ire) mare Esmay (Aus). To date, she has won twice and placed twice for earnings of $34,180.

Decarchy, a 12-year-old son of Distant View out of 2002 Broodmare of the Year Toussaud, stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. With lifetime progeny earnings of more than $1.3 million, he has already been awarded titles as California’s leading first-crop sire of 2007 and leading second-crop sire of 2008. — March 12, 2009

12/14/2008: Three Decarchy descendants win their Southern California starts

Decarchy, a steadily improving California sire who is nearing the conclusion of his second year with eligible runners, attained three California-bred winners on the Cushion Track main surface at Hollywood Park during a four-day period in mid-December.

Kicking off the streak on December 11 was 3-year-old Troubletimesthree, a colt out of the Cee’s Tizzy mare Cee Again who moved from eighth to first under jockey Joe Talamo in a 1 1/16-mile maiden event. Bred and campaigned by Magali Ventures LLC and trained by Mike Puype through his initial four starts, Troubletimesthree won by 1 1/2 lengths and was claimed from the race for $25,000.

Two days later, 2-year-old Glow Girl Go, another Magali Ventures homebred, galloped home a 1 1/4-length winner in her second career outing: a 6 1/2-furlong race for $32,000 maiden claiming fillies. Conditioned by Doug O’Neill and piloted by Michael Baze, she was produced by the Chief’s Crown mare Tiara Glow, and is a full sister to Decarchy’s top earner, the 2008 Hollywood Park stakes winner Harlene.

Another Decarchy filly, Blame the Wine, capped her sire’s local achievements on December 14, with a hard-trying victory under Rafael Bejarano in a 6 1/2-furlong, $12,500 claiming contest, which she captured by a head following a stirring stretch duel. Bred, like the other recent winners, by Magali Ventures and produced by Storm Cat’s unraced daughter Catrina, the 3-year-old filly is owned by Sterling Stables LLC, Mark Gorman and Anthony Scott, and has earned $16,800, with two wins from four starts.

Eleven-year-old Decarchy, a son of Distant View out of 2002 Broodmare of the Year Toussaud, holds court at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. Already crowned California’s leading first-crop sire of 2007, he is poised to be named the state’s leading second-crop sire of 2008, with progeny earnings of $871,527 accrued to date this year. - December 14, 2008

11/22/2008: Speedy Decarchy fillies push their sire to the forefront

A pair of 3-year-old fillies from the debut crop of California stallion Decarchy won bicoastal races on back-to-back days in late November to enhance the budding status of their sire.
On November 21, the Doug O’Neill-trained Blame the Wine found her winning stride in her third career outing, a $25,000 maiden claiming race at Hollywood Park. With leading local rider Rafael Bejarano in the irons, the 3-2 wagering favorite lived up to her expectations, translating an early stalking position into a strong stretch drive and reaching the wire a length in front of her nearest of nine rivals in a final time of 1:10.64 for the six-furlong CushionTrack test. Bred in California by Magali Ventures LLC and produced by Catrina, an unraced daughter of Storm Cat, Blame the Wine has earned $10,800 from three starts for Sterling Stables LLC, Mark Gorman and Anthony Scott.
The next day, Florida-based Miss Maisy turned in her third consecutive victory at Calder Race Course, a streak she has punctuated by a cumulative winning margin of nearly 26 lengths. Partnered with jockey Elvis Trujillo for her latest start, the 4-5 favorite employed her lethal early speed to control every step of the 5 1/2-furlong dirt race for $6,250 claiming fillies, dominating the seven-horse field by 7 1/2 widening lengths at the finish. Produced by the unraced Houston mare Lonestar Girl and bred in California by her trainer, Wesley Ward, Miss Maisy has earned $33,546, with four wins and four placings from 14 starts. She is owned by Ward and Steve Romano.

11/7/2008: Sophomore sire Decarchy collects four winners in nine days

The nine-day period of October 30 through November 7 proved to be a fruitful phase for Decarchy, a second-crop California sire who was represented by four winners across the United States. The quartet—three fillies and one colt—exhibited versatility, winning on dirt, turf and all-weather surfaces from distances of five furlongs to 1 1/16 miles.

The Mike Machowsky-trained runner was victorious in his seventh outing against non-winners, getting up in the final strides of a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight turf test at Hollywood Park under Rafael Bejarano on October 30. Bred by Patrick Harney and Charles Reilly and owned by Oak Valley Stable, Gooch's Dream has earned $42,360 to date.

Trained by Jonathan Nance and ridden by Clark Jones for owner Warlock Stable, the five-time starter was bred by Tim Floyd/Warlock Stables and produced by the multiple stakes-winning mare Reasonably Royal, by Petersburg.

Back at Hollywood Park on November 6, the Peter Busch homebred Showtime Apollo defeated 10 rivals in her second start, rallying from back of the pack under Aaron Gryder to a 1 3/4-length win in a state-bred, $40,000 maiden claiming race carded at 6 1/2 furlongs on CushionTrack. Conditioned by Mike Mitchell, the 3-year-old filly is out of Apollo’s unraced daughter Dancingattheapollo, and has banked $13,080.

Before that race, Decarchy had trailed Stormy Jack by just $583 in the second-year competition, but Kiss My Crown's $21,600 purse increased those 2008 earnings to $386,331 to his rival's $365,314.
That lead may be brief, however, depending upon the performance of Stormy Jack's star performer, Bob Black Jack, in Saturday's $2,000,000 Kentucky Derby.
Kiss My Crown prevailed in Thursday's race at 1 1/16 miles by pulling ahead in the final yards of a three-horse battle that began at the start and continued through the entire 1 1/16-mile race.
He wound up just a length in front of the second-place finisher after both overtook the early leader late in the stretch run, booted home by jockey Alex Solis..
The victory was the fourth in only six career starts for Kiss My Crown, whose record now shows four wins and a second for earnings of $78,800.
Bred in California by Magali Ventures, LLC, he's owned by K. K. Sangara and trained by Rafael Becerra.
Decarchy, who stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif., has sired 14 winners and runners with two-year earnings of $672,347.--May 3.

04/08/2008: Race by Race, Decarchy Son Climbs to a Win

A steady climb upward paid off with a victory for Da Nicky Saturday at Bay Meadows as he rallied late to become Decarchy's 13th winner.
The 3-year-old, who began his racing career late last year with two thirds followed by a fifth in three starts at Golden Gate Fields, started the new year by improving steadily, starting with a sixth-place finish and moving up with each race after that--fourth, second, and then first on Saturday.
That victory didn't come easily. Da Nicky raced fifth among 11 runners around both turns of the 1 1/16-mile race, finally moving into fourth place at the top of the stretch and, despite being bothered as he passed a tiring rival, pulled away steadily to reach the wire a length and a quarter on top.
With a win, a second, two thirds and a fourth in seven starts, Da Nicky has earned $20,040 for owner-breeder Randy Morris. The California-bred is trained by Ed Moger, Jr., and was ridden to his win by Francisco Duran.
Decarchy, California's leading freshman sire of 2007, is represented by stakes winner Timehascometoday and stakes-placed Harlene. His runners have earned more than $470,000.
The multiple graded stakes-winner of $703,862 stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--April 8.

3/29/2008: Decarchy Filly Scores by Four at Aqueduct

California-bred fillies sired by Decarchy are making their mark on East Coast racetracks.
They scored their second victory within a week Thursday when Sultry Katrina breezed to a wire-to-wire win at Aqueduct to become her sire's 12th winner.
Her triumph came six days after another Decarchy daughter, Miss Maisy, had broken her maiden with a 7 1/2-length victory at Gulfstream Park.
Favored Sultry Katrina, a 3-year-old, had little trouble dominating seven rivals in her fourth career start, taking the lead out of the gate in the six-furlong race and staying there to win by four lengths.
After racing unplaced in her debut last September at Belmont Park, she returned to the races at Aqueduct in January, finishing second, beaten by a nose, and was unplaced again in February before Thursday's victory. She's earned $24,629 in those four starts.
Though she's racing far from home, Sultry Katrina hasn't severed her California connections. Bred by K & M Stables, she's owned by Bay Meadows president F. Jack Liebau., Sr.
She's trained by Linda Rice and was ridden to victory by Charles Lopez.
Runners by Decarchy, last year's leading California freshman sire, have earned more than $450,000. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--March 29.

3/23/2008: Decarchy Cal-Bred Breezes to Win in Florida

California-breds haven't been winning in the Sunshine Millions competition, but the nine runners who chased Miss Maisy to the wire Friday at Gulfstream Park might find that hard to believe.
The 3-year-old Cal-bred daughter of Decarchy crushed her adversaries, drawing away to win by 7 1/2-lengths within the short space of the five-furlong race. She broke third and at the first call was second, just a length back of the leader, then took charge and pulled away steadily for her first career victory.
Bettors who made her the second favorite at 2.70-to-1 odds knew what they were doing even though her performance in two previous starts at the Florida track was dismal, unplaced in both while finishing far back. In three starts at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, she'd placed once.
But Friday's race was entirely different, and she easily became her sire's 10th winner and increased his runners' earnings to $427,483 for little more than a year at the races.
Bred by Wesley A. Ward, Miss Maisy is owned by her breeder in partnership with Maggi Moss and Steve Romano. Ward is also her trainer. Victor Santiago was the jockey in her winning race.

3/16/2008: Top Freshman Sires Add Sophomore Winners

Two of California's leading freshman sires of 2007 burnished their records Friday by sending out maiden 3-year-old winners in two states.
Decarchy, the state's champion freshman sire last year, chalked up his ninth winner when Fifty Two in a Row led most of the way to break her maiden at Bay Meadows.
Capsized, California's No. 3 freshman sire of 2007, added his eighth winner when Antelope scored easily at Sam Houston Race Park in her first career start.
Decarchy's career progeny earnings now exceed $390,00; Capsized's runners have earned more than $200,000.
Fifty Two in a Row, unplaced in her first two starts, stretched out to one mile for the first time and had little trouble finding the winner's circle in her third effort, taking the lead coming out of the final turn and keeping it to the finish, hitting the wire 1 1/4 lengths in front.
Antelope, beginning her career at a mile and 70 yards, broke second and dogged the leader all the way to midstretch, where she moved ahead and extended her lead to the finish, winding up 4 1/4 lengths in front.
Fifth Two in a Row was bred and is owned by Barbara T. Kolbe and is trained by Robert Hess, Sr. She's a Cal-bred, ridden in Friday's race by Luis Contreras.
Antelope, bred in California by BnD Chase Thoroughbreds, is owned by Tigertail Ranch and trained by Danny Pish. She was ridden Friday by Quincy Hamilton.

01/27/2008: Another Decarchy Runner Wins for 3rd Time

Decarchy, last year's California champion freshman sire, added another three-time winner to his record when Kiss My Crown surged from last to first for a 2 1/4-length victory Sunday at Santa Anita.
The win, Kiss My Crown's third in four career starts, increased the 3-year-old colt's earnings to $47,800.
He broke last in the six-horse field in the seven-furlong event and remained there until he reached the turn for home. Jockey Alex Solis kicked him into gear at that point and he moved up steadily, taking the lead in midstretch and pulling off to win clear.
Decarchy now has eight winners and earners of more than $380,000 from his first crop. He has no starters yet from his second crop, now 2-year-olds.
In addition to two stakes horses, Decarchy has two three-time winners and three others who have won twice.

02/04/2008: Decarchy's Runners Running and Winning

His successful freshman sire year is behind him, but Decarchy is continuing to improve his record.
De Car Guy became the fifth runner by last year's California champion freshman sire to win against winners when he came from behind in the stretch to score a victory Saturday at Santa Anita.
Third by almost two lengths entering the stretch in the seven-furlong race, De Car Guy applied steady pressure to gain the lead in deep stretch and held on to win by a half-length under jockey Mike Smith.
The win was the second in five starts for De Car Guy, who now has earned $34,520.
Bred in California by his owners, Mike Burns and Dan Sisemore, De Car Guy is trained by Robert Hess, Jr.
De Car Guy is one of eight winners sired by Decarchy, one of them a stakes winner. Another, still a maiden, placed in a Santa Anita stake. His runners have earned more than $350,000.
In four seasons on the track, Decarchy earned $703,862 while winning two graded stakes races and placing in four others, including the Grade 1 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--February 4.

1/29/2008: Decarchy Continues to Send Out Winners

Crowned not long ago as California's champion freshman sire of 2007, Decarchy is continuing to take care of business.
Two of his daughters reached the winner's circle at Santa Anita on Saturday, Onefunsonofagun scoring her third career victory and Stroppy capturing her first start.
Decarchy now is represented by eight winners and earners of more than $335,000. His runners include stakes winner Timehascometoday and stakes-placed Harlene.
Stroppy, with a win in her only start, boasts a perfect record and earnings of $13,200. Onefunsonofagun has never been off the board in five starts, with three wins, a second, and a fourth for earnings of $54,440.

1/3/2007: Decarchy: No. 1 California Freshman Sire

Multiple graded stakes winner Decarchy became California's champion freshman sire of 2007 with an impressive debut in which his runners outearned their rivals by a wide margin.
With seven winners from 17 starters, Decarchy's runners amassed $289,243 in earnings, far more than runner-up Stormy Jack's total of $193,270. He had five winners from eight starters. Capsized, with four winners from 13 starters, was third with $125,921.
Decarchy's seven winners were the most by any first-crop California sire. They were led by stakes winner Timehascometoday, who had earnings of $73,998.
Stormy Jack, second in number of winners, with five, was given a late boost when Bob Black Jack captured the $125,000-added California Breeders' Champion Stakes at Santa Anita on December 26 to end the year with earnings of $131,425.
Capsized got off to an early lead when Maxie's Night Cap won his first three starts at Emerald Downs, but he was soon overtaken by Decarchy.

12/12/2007: Still Another First-Crop Winner for Decarchy

Continuing to widen his lead in the California freshman sire race, Decarchy added his seventh winner Sunday at Hollywood Park when Quisisana captured her first career start.
The majority of Decarchy's winners have broken their maidens in wire-to-wire victories, and Quisisana almost did the same, taking the lead entering the turn in the 6 1/2-furlong race and pulling away to win by a length and a half.
Quisisana broke second, just a head back of the leader, and challenged relentlessly down the backstretch before taking the lead and cruising to victory under jockey David Flores.
With seven winners and $270,283 in earnings, Decarchy has a comfortable lead over his nearest challenger, Capsized, with four winners and $117,741 in earnings. Stormy Jack, with five winners, is his closest rival in that category.

12/5/2007: 1-2 Punch Lengthens Decarchy's Sire Lead

Although jockey David Flores lost his whip in midstretch, Cantina's Rose held on for an allowance victory Sunday at Hollywood Park, completing a weekend double score for freshman sire Decarchy.
Undefeated Kiss My Crown got Decarchy's Hollywood Park weekend off to a flying start Friday with his second win in as many starts and Cantina's Rose finished it with a head victory in Sunday's race.
Cantina's Rose has earned $59,160 with two wins and a third in four career starts. In Sunday's race, she moved steadily from fifth on the backstretch to third in the early stretch and took the lead under left-handed urging by Flores.
But after she took the lead just past midstretch, Flores dropped his whip. She nevertheless continued to race strongly, refusing to give up her lead, and hit the wire a head in front at the end of the 1 1/16-mile route.
Her winning purse increased the earnings of Decarchy's first crop to $250,843, placing him far in front in the race for the 2008 California freshman sire championship. He leads in both total earnings and number of winners, with six.
Cantina's Rose, bred in California by B&B Zietz Stables, Inc., Bruce Henry Zietz, and Beverly Kay Zietz, is owned by B and B Zietz Stables, Inc., and trained by Mike Puype.

Undefeated Kiss My Crown extended Decarchy's lead in the California freshman sire race Friday at Hollywood Park with his second victory in as many starts at the track's winter meeting.
The Doug O'Neill-trained colt staged a late surge in the six-furlong race to gain the lead in the final sixteenth and pull away to win by a length and a half. It was his second victory of the only month of his racing career to date; he broke his maiden in his debut on November 7.
With six winners and earnings of $223,843, Decarchy is well on his way to taking the 2007 California freshman sire title. His progeny earnings are more than double those of second-place Capsized at $111,622.

11/17/2007: Decarchy Runners' Earnings Top $200,000

Sailing home by a clear five lengths for her second win in three starts, Onefunsonofagun sent the earnings of Decarchy's first crop past the $200,000 mark Thursday at Hollywood Park.
Decarchy is surging toward California's 2007 freshman sire championship, almost $100,000 ahead of second-place Capsized. His runners have earned $200,163, giving him a wide lead over Capsized, with $104,926. No other California first-crop sire has reached six figures in progeny earnings.
Onefunsonofagun broke her maiden in her first career start on September 20 at Fairplex Park, then dropped back to a fourth-place finish in her first race against winners a month later at Santa Anita.
But she had no trouble finding her way back to the winner's circle in Thursday's 6 1/2-furlong race, the longest distance she'd attempted after going four and five and a half furlongs in her first two starts.
She raced in third place early in the five-horse field before making her bid on the turn for home. In the stretch she moved into the lead and stretched it to five lengths at the finish under a hand ride by jockey Joe Talamo.
She was bred in Kentucky by her owner, Justin Kengye, and is trained by Brian Koriner.

Decarchy accelerated his drive toward California's freshman sire championship Saturday at Hollywood Park when De Car Guy won a stretch battle to become the sixth winner from his first crop to reach racing age.
It was his second winner of the week at Hollywood Park.
Decarchy is the state's only freshman sire with six winners, and he has a comfortable lead in total earnings, with $184,723, well ahead of second-place Capsized, with $102,586.
A seventh Decarchy runner, Harlene, is still a maiden but is stakes-placed, having finished third in the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile Stakes.
De Car Guy was returning to action for the first time since finishing unplaced on August 26 at Del Mar in his only other start. He's earned $12,400 in those two starts.

Making his first start, Kiss My Crown started slowly in the six-furlong event, racing in the middle of the 12-horse field to the turn for home, where he moved up to third and began a challenge that lasted almost to the finish before he overtook the front-runner in the final yards to win by a neck under urging by jockey Garrett Gomez.

Timehascometoday took the lead at the start of the six-furlong race, lost it briefly on the turn for home but got back in front and stayed there while under pressure all the way to the win, winning by a head under jockey Tony Matteucci.
The 2-year-old broke his maiden at Turf Paradise in his first start and followed with a second and a third in three starts at Yavapai Downs and Turf Paradise before scoring his first stakes victory, defeating 11 rivals.

20/2/2007: A Fourth Winner for Freshman Sire Decarchy

Cantina's Rose came on strong in the stretch Sunday at Santa Anita to become Decarchy's fourth first-crop winner, but she was the first of the four not to break her maiden in her first career start.
She broke her maiden in her second career start.
Those four winners give Decarchy a tie for first place in number of winners by California freshman sires of 2007 and their earnings of $73,065 place him second in that category.
Cantina's Rose, a California-bred, debuted on August 30 with a third-place finish at Del Mar, missing by just a length and a quarter. Both of her starts have been in maiden special weight races. She's earned $32,160.
In Sunday's race, she lingered in seventh place in the field of 13, swinging four wide into the stretch, but accelerated to the lead halfway down the lane and pulled away to win by 3 1/2 lengths under jockey David Flores.
She's owned by her breeder, B & B Zietz Stables, who bred her in partnership with Beverly Kay and Bruce Henry Zietz. She's trained by Mike Puype.

10/4/06: Barretts Yearling Sale Average Edges Upward

The average for the California October Yearling Sale crept upward by the slightest of margins Tuesday at the Barretts sale complex at Fairplex Park, but that was almost the only good news in the day's results.
The average of $25,362 for 171 yearlings sold was 0.02 percent higher--just $51--than the $25,311 average for 207 sold at last year's inaugural offering of the sale jointly sponsored by Barretts and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
But all the other markers were down. The buyback rate soared from 26.9 percent last year to 38.7 percent, the median slipped 5.9 percent, from $17,000 to $16,000, and the gross was 17.2 percent lower, dropping from $5,239,400 to $4,336,900.
The high price of $240,000 paid for a Cape Town filly (#301) was $50,000 less than the $290,00 paid for a High Demand colt last year. This year's sale topper, consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency, Inc., Agent, was bought by pinhooker John Brocklebank, agent.
This year there was a bright spot. Six yearlings sold for $100,000 or more, one more than the five that reached that level in 2005. Tuesday's other five six-figure sellers were a Yonauska colt (#227) at $150,000, a Decarchy filly (#326) at $140,000, a More Than Ready filly (#37) at $130,000, a Kafwain filly (#313) at $115,000, and a Tribal Rule filly (#101) at $100,000. --October 4.
