04/06/2008: Bestdressed's Big Surge Yields Black Type

An explosive burst carried Bestdressed from last place Friday at Santa Anita, and he become Lit de Justice's 31st stakes horse with a third-place finish in the $125,000-added Sensational Star Handicap.
The 4-year-old also became the fourth blacktype horse from Lit de Justice's first two California-sired crops. He ran second last fall in the California Cup Starter Sprint Handicap at Santa Anita, but that race didn't qualify for black type. The Sensational Star did.
Those two California crops, now 3 and 4 years old, have produced 31 winners and earners of more than $1,200,000. Bestdressed has contributed $130,500 of the total with three wins, three seconds, and six thirds in 18 starts.
In the Sensational Star at 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course, Bestdressed broke last in the field of seven and stayed there until he reached the stretch, where he surged forward to pass all but the final two leaders, winding up a length and three quarters behind the winner.
He was bred in California by Paul Boghossian, is owned by Triple B Farms, is trained by Dan McFarlane, and was ridden Friday by Jon Court.
Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Lit de Justice, sire of earners of more than $16,600,000, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--April 6.

2/19/2008: Lit de Justice Cal-Bred Wins Allowance Race

Lit de Justice's California-bred runners continued their march to the winner's circle Sunday at Santa Anita when 3-year-old Gambler's Justice got up in the final strides to take an allowance race at Santa Anita and record her second straight victory at the Arcadia track.
After breaking fourth in the field of six in the six-furlong race, the filly moved up steadily but almost ran out of track, finally reaching the lead a few yards before the finish to win by a head under urging by jockey Richard Migliore.
Gambler's Justice, who's never run in a claiming race, started for the first time at Hollywood Park's winter meeting, finishing fourth. She was second in her second start and reached the winner's circle on January 19 at Santa Anita to begin what is now a two-race victory string. She's earned $70,920.
She is one of nine winners from the second crop sired by Lit de Justice since his arrival in California. His first crop, now 4-year-olds, has produced 21 winners from 25 starters. With 29 winners from 46 starters, those two California crops have produced earners of more than $1,150,000.
Gambler's Justice, bred in California by Suarez Racing, Inc., is owned by Craig, Halo Farms, and Magerman and trained by Bill Spawr.
Lit de Justice, an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, has sired earners of more than $16,500,000. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--February 19.

1/3/2008: Lit de Justice Cal-Crop Runners Finish Fast

Topping off a victory-filled 2007 season, runners from Lit de Justice's first two California crops scored year-end triumphs at Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields.
On December 30, 3-year-old Bring to Justice, one of 20 winners from Lit de Justice's first California crop, posted his second triumph of the year, coming from fifth place in the stretch to prevail by three-quarters of a length over a 1 1/16-mile route at Golden Gate Fields.
A day earlier, 2-year-old Sterling Misty had rallied from eighth at the top of the stretch to win by a head in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Santa Anita.
Lit de Justice's foals of 2004, his first crop sired in California after his arrival from Kentucky, ended the year with earnings of $724,701 for their two seasons of competition.
His 2007 2-year-olds earned $210,368, with six winners from 17 starters.
Bring to Justice was bred and is owned by Joan Hadley Thoroughbreds. He's trained by Monty Meier and was ridden by Roberto Gonzalez. Sterling Misty, bred by James Briere, is owned by Marshall Boschetti and trained by Lewis Cenicola. His rider was Mike Smith.

12/20/2007: Lit de Justice: 20th Winner in 1st Cal Crop

Climaxing a steady climb toward his first visit to the winner's circle, Funny Justice burst free for a 6 1/2-length victory Tuesday at Turf Paradise to become the 20th winner from the first California crop of Lit de Justice.
Most of those winners have broken their maidens by leading from wire to wire, and Funny Justice followed much the same pattern in the 6 1/2-furlong race. He broke second and pressed the leader though the backstretch, trailing by only a head, then he moved into the lead in the turn and drew away in the final furlong, giving jockey Orlando Martinez an easy ride to the finish.
Funny Justice had run fourth at Bay Meadows and second at Fairplex Park in his first two career starts before moving to Turf Paradise. At the Arizona track he ran sixth, fifth, fifth, and third, in that order, before climbing the final rung to the winner's circle in Tuesday's race.
He was bred in California by Pablo A. and Michelle Suarez and is owned and trained by Robert Caine.
From 25 starters in his first California crop, now 3-year-olds, Lit de Justice has sired 20 winners with earnings of more than $715,000. Five members of his second crop have earned more than $160,000.
For his entire eight-crop sire career, Lit de Justice has sired 194 winners and earners of more than $16,210,000 with 29 stakes horses. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--December 20.

12/2/2007: Another Frequent Winner for Lit de Justice

Leading from start to finish, Rudeameanie became the fifth winner of three or more races from Lit de Justice's first California crop with a 4 3/4-length victory Friday at Hollywood Park.
After being claimed for $25,000 while breaking his maiden at Del Mar, Rudeameanie has raced only in allowance company, putting together a third-second-first-first string since then under the tutelage of trainer Rafael Becerra for owners Nancy Elder and Janice and George McClintock.
He hasn't been off the board in eight career starts in which he's earned $71,080. He's won three with three seconds, a third, and a fourth. He was ridden in Friday's race by Tyler Baze.
Lit de Justice's first California crop now boasts 19 winners, one with four wins, four with three, and three with two. Their earnings total more than $675,000.
His second California crop has produced five winners to date. Runners from that crop have earned more than $150,000.
In his entire career at stud, Lit de Justice, an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, has sired earners of more than $16,100,000 in 10 crops. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--December 2.

11/3/2007: Lit de Justice 3-Year-Old Tops $100,000

Favored Lit'sgoodlookngray pulled away in the stretch Thursday at Santa Anita to register his second victory and become the first of Lit de Justice's California foals to exceed $100,000 in earnings.
The twice stakes-placed 3-year-old, piloted by jockey Garrett Gomez, took the lead in the upper stretch and moved on to a 1 1/2-length victory to increase his career earnings to $100,706.
He's one of 19 winners from the first California-sired crop of Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Lit de Justice, who also has four winners from his second crop, now 2-year-olds. Runners from that first crop have earned more than $600,000, those of the second crop more than $140,000.
In Thursday's 6 1/2-furlong trip down Santa Anita's hillside course, Lit'sgoodlookngray raced in third place, not far back, and at the bottom of the downhill run moved outside and took charge.
Bred in California by Pablo A. and Michelle Suarez, Lit'sgoodlookngray is owned by La Canada Stable LLC and trained by Jack Carava.
Lit de Justice, winner of five graded stakes, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--November 3.

10/31/2007: La Salle Glory enjoys career season
By BILL TALLON

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Bev Buck had more than her share of the spotlight back in 1998, guiding the likes of Terremoto and Riddells Creek through Sovereign Award campaigns.
Things may not be quite as exciting around the Buck barn these days, but the trainer still has plenty to cheer for with La Salle Glory, No Dilettante, and Silver Beacon all in the midst of solid campaigns.
"I like everybody I'm running," said Buck, 54. "They don't give me any reason not to. They're not complicated, not unsound. They're all healthy and happy."
The best of the bunch right now is La Salle Glory, a Kentucky-bred 6-year-old who is owned by Buck.
La Salle Glory will be looking for her first stakes win in Saturday's $125,000 Ontario Fashion, a six-furlong race for fillies and mares.
"She's never been as good as she is right now," Buck said. "I always point out that her sire, Lit de Justice, won the Breeders' Cup Sprint here as a 6-year-old. His horses get better with age."
This season indeed has been La Salle Glory's best as she has won 3 of 11 starts and $148,017. She has raced 46 times in her career, winning 8 starts and adding 10 seconds and 5 thirds while amassing $504,883.
And, were it not for La Salle Glory's tendency toward self-damage, Buck believes those numbers could have been much better.
"She's always getting hurt at the farm, doing stupid stuff," Buck said. "Once, when she was turned out, she ripped her knee open. Another time, she ripped her nostril up. She's her own worst enemy."
La Salle Glory's most recent mishap, however, was not self-induced.
"We were taking her to the field one day, a couple of months ago," Buck said. "She was going to pass a horse when the horse kicked out at her.
"She went sideways, then ran head first into a tree."
La Salle Glory also suffered scrapes to a knee, ankle, and shoulder.
The symptoms did not take long to subside, but after La Salle Glory finished sixth here Sept. 8, she was sent to a veterinary clinic in nearby Barrie for an examination.
"They found a fracture in her skull," Buck said. "We had to give her three weeks off."
La Salle Glory obviously has suffered no lingering effects as she won her next two starts while racing with the optional claiming tag in second- and third-level allowance races.

10/30/2007: Same Old Story--A Wire-to-Wire Maiden Win

Lucky Honey broke his maiden Saturday at Santa Anita, following in the front-running footsteps of three of his classmates before him.
The 2-year-old colt is the fourth member of Lit de Justice's second California crop to reach the winner's circle--and every one of the four won by leading from wire to wire, never headed.
A sizeable number of the 19 winners from Lit de Justice's first California crop also broke their maidens in wire-to-wire performances, hardly surprising for runners sired by an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter.
Lucky Honey required three starts to figure out how to win, but when he did, he took care of business with dispatch, breaking a head in front and steadily increasing his lead to reach the wire 2 1/4 lengths in front. He finished fourth in his first two starts, one at Del Mar and the other at Santa Anita.
He was bred in California by his owner, Recabaren Ranch, and is trained by Rafael Becerra. He was ridden in his winning effort by Isaias Enriquez.
For his entire career at stud, Lit de Justice has sired 192 winners, earners of more than $15,900,000, and 29 stakes horses. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--October 30.

10/24/2007: Another Wire-to-Wire Lit de Justice Winner

Like many of his classmates before him, Bring to Justice broke his maiden Sunday at Bay Meadows by leading from start to finish.
His wire-to-wire victory made him the 19th winner from the first California crop of Lit de Justice, and the majority of the 19 have broken their maidens by taking the lead out of the gate and staying there to the finish, a style appropriate for offspring of an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter.
With 19 winners from 24 starters who've earned almost $600,000, Lit de Justice is off to a fast start as a California sire. In addition, he has sired three winners from his second California crop, now 2-year-olds. All three broke their maidens wire to wire.
Bring to Justice was unplaced in his first three starts, but he blossomed in his fourth, shaking his nearest rival turning for home and pulling away to lead by six lengths at the end of the six-furlong race.
Bred and owned by Joan Hadley Thoroughbreds, Bring to Justice is trained by Monty Meier and was ridden Sunday by Joan Ochoa.
Lit de Justice, sire of earners of more than $15,900,000, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--October 24.

10/19/2007: Lit de Justice Gets 18th Cal-Crop Winner

Magical Justice didn't quite follow the tactical pattern of most of her successful classmates, but she nevertheless had little difficulty becoming the 18th winner from the first California crop of Lit de Justice with a 2 1/4 length victory Tuesday at Portland Meadows.
The 3-year-old California-bred broke fourth in the five-furlong race and didn't take the lead until she swung into the stretch, but she had no trouble from then on and steadily widened her lead. Many of Lit de Justice's other winners from that crop--foals of 2004--have broken their maidens, wire to wire.
Unraced at 2, Magical Justice didn't make her first start until September 12 this year. She was unplaced in her first three starts but hit a winning stride Tuesday in her fourth effort.
Magical Justice, bred by Leatherman Racing LLC, is owned by K J Star Stable, is trained by Robert Baze, and was ridden in Tuesday's race by Javier Matias.
Runners from Lit de Justice's first California crop have earned more than $560,000. His second California crop's earnings are more than $100,000. Three of them are winners this year at 2.
Lit de Justice is the sire of 190 winners and earners of more than $15,700,000. He stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--October 19.

09/29/2007: Another Lit de Justice Wire-to-Wire Winner

As befits an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, Lit de Justice's runners aren't just winning, they're winning wire to wire.
Twice Justified became the 17th winner from Lit de Justice's first California crop Thursday at Presque Isle Downs, and like most of his contemporaries, he led all the way, from the gate to the wire.
Those 17 combined with three from his second crop give Lit de Justice 20 California-sired winners, and the great majority of them broke their maidens in wire-to-wire victories.
Twice Justified got out of the gate first and pulled two lengths in front at the top of the stretch, but she was challenged and had to fight to reach the finish a neck in front after 5 1/2 furlongs.
It was her fourth start in a curious cross-country tour. She began her career by racing unplaced in $25,000 maiden claiming races at Hollywood Park and Del Mar, then turned up at Turfway Park, where she ran second for $7,500 maiden claiming.
Then, two weeks later, she took a great leap upward, entered in a maiden special weight race carrying a purse of $70,000 at the new Erie, Pa., track.
And she won, pocketing a winner's purse of $30,000, which amounted to almost her entire career earnings of $32,200.
On the same day that Twice Justified broke her maiden, Pure Justice became the third three-time winner from Lit de Justice's first California crop, coming from behind to score by a head at Bay Meadows. It was his second win in a row and increased his earnings to $25,252.
Pure Justice was bred by Julius H. Zolezzi, is owned by Theresa and Edward DeNike, and is trained by Lloyd Mason. Twice Justified was bred by Todd Gerbovaz and is owned and trained by William E. Hall. Both horses are California-breds.
Lit de Justice, sire of earners of more than $15,500,000 from eight crops sired in Kentucky and California, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 29.

09/22/2007: Lit de Justice Cal-Crop Winner Scores Again

Gotta Getcha combined a late rally with clever tactics to become the second three-time winner from Lit de Justice's first California crop Thursday at Fairplex Park.
The 3-year-old joins one four-time winner and four double winners from the first crop sired by the champion sprinter after his arrival in California from Kentucky. In all, 16 runners from that crop have reached the winner's circle, as have three from his second California crop.
Gotta Getcha raced in the middle of the nine-horse pack to the final turn, where he launched a strong bid that was enhanced by an opening that jockey Martin Pedroza found along the rail. Gotta Getcha slipped through and got up to win by a head.
Gotta Getcha was bred in California by Magali Ventures, LLC, and is owned by Charles Lo. He's trained by Chuck Peery.
Lit de Justice, sire of 29 stakes horses and earners of more than $15,500,000, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 22.

09/21/2007: 19th Cal-Crop Winner for Lit de Justice

Following the familiar pattern of victories by his classmates, Themis Valentine shook off an early rival and led the rest of the way Wednesday at Fairplex Park to become the 16th winner from the first California crop of Lit de Justice.
In addition, the Eclipse Award winner has three winners from the second crop he sired following his arrival in California from Kentucky--a total of 19.
A majority of those 19 winners broke their maidens with wire-to-wire victories, and Themis Valentine came close to doing the same in the six-furlong maiden race. She rushed up to challenge the early leader, disposed of her within a quarter-mile, and went on to lead the rest of the way while under pressure through the stretch.
Themis Valentine took her time reaching the winner's circle, breaking her maiden in her eighth start. She had two seconds and a third while still a maiden, and with her winner's purse from Wednesday's race now has earnings of $32,900.
She was bred in California by Milton Allan Policzer, is owned by Policzer, Neil A. Hames and Owners Stable, and is trained by Doug O'Neill. She was ridden by Tyler Baze.
Lit de Justice's 36 runners from his two California crops have earned more than $575,000. The 249 runners from all eight of his crops have earned more than $15,500,000.
Lit de Justice stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 21.

09/17/2007: Lit de Justice Runners Strike at Two Tracks

Lit de Justice's California-sired runners continued their success on two fronts Saturday with a win at Fairplex Park and a stakes placing at Bay Meadows.
Thundering Justice became the first stakes horse from Lit de Justice's second California crop with a third-place finish in the $60,000-added Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes at Bay Meadows and Justcruise became the seventh multiple winner from his first crop with a wire-to-wire breeze at Fairplex Park.
Thundering Justice suffered defeat after winning both of his first two starts but he emerged from his first loss as Lit de Justice's 29th stakes horse and his second sired in California--one in each crop. He's earned $50,940 in those three starts.
Justcruise repeated the wire-to-wire winning cruise that he achieved in breaking his maiden. He finished fourth in races before and after breaking his maiden, so his record now shows two wins and two fourths in four starts for earnings of $32,160.
In the two crops sired since his arrival in California from Kentucky, Lit de Justice has 18 winners of more than $500,000. For his full career, he's sired 186 winners and earners of more than $15,400,000.
Thundering Justice was bred by Magali Ventures, LLC, is owned by Joseph P. Morey, Jr., is trained by William E. Morey, and was ridden in the Juvenile by Martin Garcia.
Justcruise was bred by Paul Boghossian, is owned by Willow Tree Farm, Inc., is trained by Kristin Mulhall, and was ridden in Saturday's race by Tyler Baze.
Lit de Justice, an Eclipse Award-winning earner of $1,397,649, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 17.

09/15/2007: Lit de Justice Gets 18th Cal-Crop Winner

First start, first out of the gate, first trip to the winner's circle.
That was the story for Deliberation Thursday at Fairplex Park as he became the 18th winner from Lit de Justice's two California-sired crops--15 from his first and three from his second.
Deliberation is the third winner from that second crop, now 2-year-olds--all three scoring wire-to-wire victories, appropriate for a sire who was an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter.
Runners from the first two crops sired by Lit de Justice since his arrival in California from Kentucky have earned more than $520,000. The first of the two crops includes a twice stakes-placed winner and seven multiple winners.
Deliberation was under pressure on the backstretch, but jockey Antonio Castanon kept him to his task and he took command in the stretch and pulled away to lead by 2 1/4 lengths at the conclusion of the 6 1/2-furlong race.
Bred in California by Peter S. Busch and Danny Haramoto, Deliberation is owned by Brian Trela and trained by Rosemary Trela.
Lit de Justice, sire of 28 stakes horses and earners of more than $15,400,000, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 15.

09/12/2007: Lit'sgoodlookngray Lookngood at Fairplex

Almost exactly a year ago, Lit'sgoodlookngray became Lit de Justice's first California-sired stakes horse with a third-place finish in the $131,600 Barretts Juvenile Stakes at Fairplex Park.
That was on September 17, 2006.
On Monday--September 10, 2007--he added his second blacktype placing with a third-place finish in the $65,000 Foothill Stakes at Fairplex Park.
Though the purse was smaller, Monday's race marked a move upward in class for the 3-year-old. The Foothill was an open stakes race; the Barretts Juvenile was a restricted event.
And he improved on his earlier performance, finishing just two lengths behind the winner, making up two lengths in the stretch drive; last year he finished 3 1/2 lengths back.
The California-bred has earnings of $67,592 in 13 starts. He's one of 15 winners from the first crop sired by Lit de Justice after his arrival in California from Kentucky.
Bred by Pablo A. and Michelle Suarez, Lit'sgoodlookngray is owned by John Pinner and trained by Danny Velasquez. He was ridden in the Foothill by Paul Atkinson.
Lit de Justice, an Eclipse Award-winning earner of $1,397,649, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--September 12.

09/05/2007: Two More Young Winners for Lit de Justice

Runners from Lit de Justice's first California crop are continuing to win, and now they're being joined by winners from his second crop to reach racing age.
Lit de Justice now has 15 winners from that first crop and two more from the second. The most recent to join that group is Aire de Stripes, a 2-year-old who broke her maiden, wire to wire, Sunday at Emerald Downs.
The following day Jojo's Justice also led from start to finish at Bay Meadows to become the seventh multiple winner from the first crop sired by Lit de Justice since his arrival at Magali Farms after standing six seasons in Kentucky.
The Eclipse Award-winning sprinter has sired 28 stakes horses and earners of more than $15,300,000 in his eight crops.
From his first California crop, Lit de Justice has one winner of four races, one winner of three, and five winners of two each. In addition, he's sired a stakes-placed runner.
Jojo's Justice is a California-bred. Aire de Stripes, though conceived in California, was foaled in Kentucky.
Jojo's Justice was bred by Recabaren Ranch, is owned by Stuart Kesselman and Tony and Marilyn Melkonian, and is trained by Art Sherman.
Aire de Stripes was bred by John and Doris Konecny, is owned by Patrick Defeo and Richard Dondero, and is trained by Dayson Lavanway.

09/03/20007: Lit de Justice Cal-Breds Keep on Winning

Still another member of Lit de Justice's first California-sired crop has made a return visit to the winner's circle.
Pure Justice became the sixth member of that crop to win at least twice when he employed a strong stretch run to score by a half-length Thursday at Bay Meadows.
Four of those 15 winners have won twice, one has won three times, and one has won four times. One of the 15 is unbeaten in two starts and another is stakes-placed.
Runners from that crop are now 3-year-olds, and their combined earnings exceed $400,000. In addition, Lit de Justice has one winner from his second crop sired since his arrival in California from Kentucky.
For his full sire career, Lit de Justice has 185 winners, 28 stakes horses, and earners of more than $15,300,000.
Pure Justice, bred in California by Julius H. Zolezzi, is owned by Theresa and Edward DeNike, and is trained by Lloyd Mason. He was ridden in Thursday's race by David Lopez.

08/26/2007: Lit de Justice 2-Year-Old Colt Stays Unbeaten

Thundering Justice, emerging as the star of Lit de Justice's second California crop, remained undefeated with a one-sided allowance victory Friday at Bay Meadows.
The 2-year-old broke his maiden by three lengths July 27 at Del Mar, shipped north under new ownership, and came right back with a 4 1/2-length win in allowance company, increasing his earnings to $41,580 in just two starts.
He's the first winner from Lit de Justice's second California crop, joining 15 winners from his first, now 3-year-olds. The Eclipse Award-winning sprinter arrived at Magali Farms prior to the 2003 breeding season.
In Friday's race, Thundering Justice raced second early in the 5 1/2-furlong event, only a head behind, but soon moved to the lead and steadily increased his lead under jockey Russell Baze to hit the wire well in front.
Thundering Justice is owned by the Joseph P. Morey, Jr., Revocable Trust and is trained by William Morey. He was bred by Magali Ventures, LLC.
Lit de Justice, a Grade 1 winner of $1,397,649, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, Calif.--August 26.

08/16/2007: More Cal-Crop Winners for Lit de Justice

The list of winners from Lit de Justice's first California-sired crop continues to grow.
Two winners at Del Mar within the past few days increased to 15 the number of runners from that 2004 crop to reach the winner's circle, Rudeameanie on Saturday and Justice Is Brief on Monday.
With 15 winners from 21 starters, that crop has produced earnings in excess of $400,000. In addition, one runner from Lit de Justice's second California crop is a winner.
Those winners came from the first two crops sired by the Eclipse Award-winning stallion since his arrival in California from Kentucky, where he began his career at stud in 1997. From all crops, his runners have earned more than $15,200,000.
Neither Rudeameanie nor Justice Is Brief had much trouble winning.
Rudeameanie, favored to win, did so by taking the lead out of the gate, ahead of 10 rivals, and staying in front all the way, reaching the wire 3 1/4 lengths in front of his nearest challenger as jockey Jon Court tucked away his whip.
Justice Is Brief broke in sixth place in the field of 12 but moved up rapidly and was in the lead at the top of the stretch. She moved away steadily and finished in front by 2 1/4 lengths under a hand ride by jockey Victor Espinoza.
It was the seventh start for Justice Is Brief, who had placed only once in six previous efforts. Her earnings now total $21,751. Rudeameanie, starting for the fourth time, came into the race off a pair of second-place finishes. He's earned $19,080.
Rudeameanie is owned by Leatherman Racing LLC and was bred by Mandysland Farm. He's trained by Doug O'Neill. Justice Is Brief, also trained by O'Neill, is owned by CNG Racing Stables, Victor Racing, Owners Stables, and his breeder, Magali Ventures, LLC.

08/06/2007: More Winners From Lit de Justice Cal Crop

Runners from Lit de Justice's first California-sired crop continue to race into the winner's circle.
Two more broke their maidens Friday to increase to 13 the number of winners from the first crop sired by the Eclipse Award-winning sprinter since his arrival in California for the 2003 breeding season.
Both of Friday's winners went wire to wire for easy victories, Justcruise by 2 1/2 lengths at Del Mar and Alibi and Excuse by seven lengths at Santa Rosa. Both were unraced last year at 2 but have moved quickly to become winners this year at 3, Justcruise in his second start and Alibi and Excuse in her fourth.
Alibi and Excuse was unplaced in her first three starts at sprint distances, but on Friday she moved to a flat mile and the difference was dramatic, as bettors who made her the favorite in the 10-horse field somehow were able to predict.
She raced under pressure, leading by only a length, until the field hit the stretch, where jockey Jose Martinez Campos set her free and she leaped into a three-length lead that grew to seven lengths at the wire.
Justcruise, fourth at six furlongs in his debut at Hollywood Park, dropped to 5 1/2 furlongs for Friday's race and never looked back as he won comfortably over 11 rivals under jockey Aaron Gryder.
Both were bred in California, Alibi and Excuse by Mandysland Farm and Justcruise by Paul Boghossian. Alibi and Excuse is owned by Leatherman Racing LLC and trained by Steve Miyadi; Justcruise is owned by Triple B Farms and trained by Doug O'Neill.

5/16/2007: Lit de Justice's First Cal-Breds Are Winning

Champion sprinter Lit de Justice's first California-bred foals are now 3-year-olds, and they're winning races.
His most recent winner from that first California crop is Forseti's Question, who got up in the last few strides to break his maiden Thursday at Hollywood Park in only his second trip to the post. He won by a nose.
Forseti's Question was the ninth runner from that crop to reach the winner's circle, joining eight others in a group that includes one stakes-placed winner and two double winners.
And most of them are winning in California--seven of the nine. Three won at Santa Anita, one at Hollywood Park, one at Fairplex Park, one at Golden Gate Fields and one at both Golden Gate Fields and Bay Meadows.
Another won at Turf Paradise and the ninth won at both Northlands Park and Stampede Park.
His 16 starters have earned only a few dollars less than $200,000. Only one of his second California crop of 37 foals--now 2-year-olds--has started to date.

The 2-year-old California-bred was taken back at the start and settled in to seventh place in the field of nine in the one-mile race. He was taken four wide on the turn for home and with a burst of speed at the furlong pole took command and pulled away to win by 4 1/2 lengths under jockey Catalino Martinez.
Trato won his first career start on September 17 at Golden Gate Fields but couldn't come near the winner's circle in his next three starts, finishing seventh, eighth, and third before Monday's decisive victory.

09/19/2006: Stakes Horse in Lit de Justice's First Cal Crop

Lit de Justice's first California foals are doing all right.
The 2-year-olds scored a double hit Sunday when Lit'sgoodlookngray finished third in the $130,000-added Barretts Juvenile Stakes at Fairplex Park and Trato broke his maiden at Golden Gate Fields to become the third winner from that crop.
Champion sprinter Lit de Justice is the sire of 168 winners and earners of more than $13,000,000 from his years at stud in Kentucky, but this year's 2-year-olds are his first California-sired offspring. With Lit'sgoodlookngray's placing in the Juvenile, he's now the sire of 28 stakes horses.
Lit'sgoodlookngray raced in mid-pack to the stretch and moved up to second place, but he couldn't sustain the drive and settled for third. After placing only once in his first five starts, he's found his stride and finished second at Del Mar on August 21 and won a maiden special weight race at Fairplex Park by four lengths only eight days before the Juvenile.
His record now shows a win, a second, and two thirds in eight starts for earnings of $49,792. He was bred by Pablo A. Suarez and Michelle Suarez and is owned by John E. Pinner. His trainer is Danny Velasquez and he was ridden in the Juvenile by Aaron Gryder.
At Golden Gate Fields, Trato wasted no time becoming a winner, breaking his maiden in his first start with a strong rally that took him from last to first in the six-horse field running a mile and a sixteenth.
Last going into the final turn, Trato moved up strongly and got up in time to win by a head under jockey Catalino Martinez.
The gelding was bred by Magali Ventures, LLC, and is owned by Capelli, Cavalli, Lage or Owners Stable. He's trained by Armando Lage.

9/4/2006: Iowan Is Lit de Justice's 27th Stakes Horse

More than a year after his first and only venture into added-money competition, Lit de Justice's Graysideofjustice tried again Saturday at Canterbury Park and almost became a stakes winner..
The 3-year-old Iowa-bred fought for the lead through the stretch in the $40,000 MTA Stallion Auction Laddie Stakes and missed by a neck as he was overtaken in the final strides by a late closer. Nevertheless, his second-place finish made him his sire's 27th stakes horse.
Never worse than second in the seven-horse field, Graysideofjustice fought into the lead entering the turn and stayed there until overtaken at the wire in the
6 1/2-furlong event. He was ridden by Derek Bell.
Graysideofjustice's only other stakes attempt was a fourth-place finish on July 16, 2005. Since then he's run exclusively in allowance races at Prairie Meadows, winning two and placing in three others in seven starts.
Graysideofjustice was bred by his owner, Dennis S. Johnson, and is trained by Larry Dunbar. With a record of three wins, three seconds, and a third in 11 starts, he's earned $80,010.

Lit de Justice, whose sire record has been made by runners sired before his move west, has his first winner from his first California crop.
That first California-bred winner, Stone Justice, traveled a long way north to make her first start, and she found the winner's circle in her debut--at Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alberta.
She handled that first start at 3 1/2 furlongs like a much more experienced runner, breaking second and pressing the leader to the stretch, where she took charge and drew clear to win by 3 1/2 lengths under jockey Stephan Heiler.
Bred in California by Pablo A. and Michelle Suarez, she's owned by Al Rupertus and trained by Carson Frey.

09/20/2005: Another Close Chicago Encounter for Auston

Lit de Justice's 6-year-old son Justice for Auston has earned $287,897 and has a special relationship with the Taylor's Special Stakes at Arlington Park.
Justice for Auston has started 40 times in his five-year career, but only five times in stakes races--three of them in the Taylor's Special Stakes of 2002, 2003 and 2005--and he's placed in three of them, all in the Taylor's Special Stakes at Arlington Park.
He finished second in 2002, third in 2003, and Sunday at the Chicago track he ran second all he way, challenging the front-runner from start to finish, and the front-runner refused to give way, winding up 1 1/4 lengths in front of the frustrated Auston.
The Chicago bettors, heeding the lesson of history, sent Justice for Auston off as--what else?--their second choice, behind the favored winner.
Once more denied victory in the Taylor's Special, the Kentucky-bred remains one of the 15 stakes-placed runners sired by Lit de Justice, still seeking to join his sire's 11 stakes winners.
Justice for Auston, bred by Kenneth A. Rose, is owned by Michael J. Bruder and trained by Dale Romans.

Racing only in allowance and stakes company since winning a maiden special weight race in her first lifetime start at 2, Silver Bird has failed to win or place only three times in 17 starts. Her career totals now are 18 starts, four wins, seven seconds and four thirds.

He's run in three stakes in his 25-race career, winning one and finishing second in the other two. In 18 starts since February, 2004, Cumby Texas has finished first eight times, second six times, third twice, fourth once, and fifth once. His earnings now total $189,270. He was bred in Kentucky by L. T. Smith Enterprises and races in the colors of Fast Forward Racing Stable LLC. He's trained by Guadalupe Preciado, under whose conditioning his finished on the board 19 times in 21 starts. 3/16/2005: Gritty Injustice Captures Grade 3 Azeri

Injustice, a 4-year-old daughter of Lit de Justice, took the lead out of the gate and refused to relinquish it to capture Friday's Grade 3 Azeri Breeders' Cup Stakes at Oakland Park.
The victory was the second straight and the third in four starts for the Kentucky-bred filly. She was already a stakes winner, but the Azeri marked her first graded victory. She'd never won past seven furlongs until she took a one-mile allowance race at Oaklawn on February 12 and in the Azeri she stretched out to a mile and a sixteenth.
Before that February win she'd fallen into a frustrating pattern, three times winning and then running fourth the in following race. Now she's broken that sequence with two wins in a row. Her career record now shows eight wins at 2, 3, and 4 with total earnings of $249,820.
Bred by Mt. Joy Stables and Dan Dressel, she's owned by Turf Express, Inc., and D. and E. Yates, Ltd., and trained by Wayne Catalano.

Making only her fourth start and still a maiden, Lip Gloss became Lit de Justice's 25th stakes horses with a competitive third-place finish in Saturday's $40,000 River Oaks Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.
The 3-year-old Kentucky-bred was sixth in the eight-horse field until the runners hit the stretch in the six-furlong event. Then she made her move and, according to the official chart, "was gaining ground in late stretch." She finished 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner and less than a length behind the second-place horse.
After running third and second in maiden special weight races in her first two starts at Remington Park, she was thrust into stakes company at the Oklahoma track and came home fourth. Moving to Houston, still a maiden, she stayed in stakes company and earned her black type in the River Oaks. Lip Gloss was bred by her owner, L. T. Smith Enterprises, and is trained by Elmer Carter.

1/17/05:2nd Stakes Placing in a Row for Mariakel

Lit de Justice's Virginia-bred daughter Mariakel, who won five races in two years of racing and earned more than $100,00 without ever placing in a stakes race, has celebrated her birthday by placing in two since becoming a 5-year-old on January 1. She finished third in the $75,000 Affectionately Handicap at Aqueduct Saturday, only two weeks after running second in the Interborough Handicap at the same track on New Year's Day. Her earnings now total $190,466. In five stakes attempts at 3 and 4 she finished fourth twice but was never able to achieve black type until her two 2005 starts.
Last in the field of six in the early going in the 1 1/16-mile Affectionately, she moved late but was unable to overtake the two leaders.
Bred by Nydrie Stud, Inc., she's owned by Crown Stable and trained by Carlos Martin.

Already stakes-placed, Injustice became Lit de Justice's 10th stakes winner Saturday with a powerful stretch run that overcame adversity and yielded victory in the $40,000 Cy-Fair Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. After four starts at Oaklawn Park and 10 at three different Louisiana tracks, the 3-year-old Injustice ventured west across the Sabine River for her first Texas start and made it a success. Her win in the Cy-Fair was her third in her last four starts and her fourth in her last six. Her earlier stakes placing came last June at Louisiana Downs when she was second in the Dixie Miss Stakes. In the six-furlong Cy-Fair, she went two wide around the turn, was blocked, angled out four wide to pass horses, and, finally clear, seized the lead with a late rush to win by a length and a quarter. Injustice, bred in Kentucky by Mt. Joy Stables and Dan Dressel, is owned by Peggy Graham and trained by Jerry Hardin. Venturing into added-money competition for the first time, Cumby Texas came within a nose of becoming a stakes winner Friday at the Meadowlands.
The 4-year-old son of Lit de Justice finished only a nose behind the winner in the $60,000 My Frenchman Stakes, a race that saw three horses separated by that razor-thin margin.
Cumby Texas wound up in a dead heat for second place to become his sire's 23rd stakes horse and increase his own bankroll to $103,215 in a career in which he's posted eight wins, five seconds and a third in 18 starts at Saratoga, Oaklawn Park, Monmouth Park, Philadelphia Park, Delaware Park and the Meadowlands.
In the My Frenchman, he took the lead soon after the start and held it to the last jump in the five-furlong event.
Bred in Kentucky by L. T. Smith Enterprises, Cumby Texas is owned by Fast Forward Racing Stable and trained by Guadalupe Preciado.

Lit de Justice's stakes-winning daughter Silver Bird increased her career earnings to $393,795 with a near-miss second-place finish in the Grade 3 Duchess Stakes Saturday at Woodbine. The 3-year-old mounted a determined stretch drive in the seven-furlong $206,150 event but fell a neck short at the finish line. Although she's still winless this year in five starts, she's finished second four times, three of them in stakes races, two of them graded. She's finished first or second in seven of her last eight starts, six of those in stakes. Silver Bird won the Glorious Song Stakes last year at 2 and has four other stakes placings. She's never raced anywhere but Woodbine and has never run for a claiming price. Bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, she's owned by James McAlpine and trained by Reade Baker. Silver Bird is one of 23 stakes horses sired by champion sprinter Lit de Justice, who stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, CA.--August 23. (Source:  The THOROUGHBRED SHOWCASE of the West)

08/16/2004: 6-Year-Old Becomes Lit de Justice's 23rd

Kentucky-bred Black Tie Justice waited until he was six years old to make his first venture into added-money competition, and when he finally did Sunday at Fort Erie, he became Lit de Justice's 23rd stakes horse. The veteran campaigner took third place in the $40,000-added Blazing Seven Stakes to increase his career bankroll to $136,764 and become Lit de Justice's 15th stakes-placed runner to go with his eight stakes winners. Black Tie Justice has started 34 times over a four-season span, winning three races and placing in 10 others. In the Blazing Seven, he was off slowly in the eight-horse field but moved up steadily and got up late to earn his black type. He was bred by Hickory Hills Racing Stable and is owned by Morris Plaunt. His trainer is John Wilson. Champion sprinter Lit de Justice, sire of earners of almost $9,000,000, stands at Magali Farms. 08/04/2004: Consistent Hour of Justice Triumphant Again
It was no surprise that Hour of Justice went off as the favorite in the $150,000-added Grade 3 Royal North Handicap Monday at Woodbine, and it was no surprise that she won. The Royal North was the eighth career start for the 4-year-old daughter of Lit de Justice, and she's won six times and run second twice to amass earnings of $388,285. Hour of Justice's win came soon after Lit de Justice staked a claim to success as a broodmare sire when Wholelottabourbon won the $125,000-added Colin Stakes at the same track. The 2-year-old gelding is the first foal out of Regretfully, a 6-year-old daughter of Lit de Justice. Hour of Justice had little trouble handling her eight rivals in the Royal North, a grass event at six furlongs, dueling for the lead early before shaking clear in the stretch to pull away to a 3 1/2-length victory in 1:07.83. Bred in Kentucky by Adena Springs and owned by Stronach Stables--both Frank Stronach entities--she's trained by Michael Keogh. Lit de Justice, an Eclipse Award-winner of $1,397,874, stands at Magali Farms, Santa Ynez, CA.--August 4. (Source:  The THOROUGHBRED SHOWCASE of the West)
